Cultivation of Clove in Indonesia

Indonesia has been the dominant producer of clove bud and clove oil in the world for decades

Clove trees are indigenous to Indonesia. It is also the largest consumer of clove bud, which is primarily used in the kretek cigarette industry. Due to this demand, farmers are using the remaining components of the clove tree to produce leaf and stem oils and their derivatives.

How have changes in the production of Patchouli affected the development of Clove Oil in Sulawesi?

Around 5 years ago, despite being the largest producer of clove bud, the Sulawesi Island contributed very little of the production of clove oil in Indonesia. Meanwhile the advent of patchouli distillation in Sulawesi eventually resulted in overproduction and a crash in patchouli prices

Farmers halted Patchouli cultivation and distillation to use the same infrastructure to distill Clove leaves and stems. Over time, other farmers followed this practice and the number of distillation stills kept growing.

Regions of Cultivation

The current Regional Distribution of Clove production in Indonesia

Today Sulawesi contributes to around 30% of the total production of Clove Oil in Indonesia,

and has the capacity to replace the Java island from its dominant position in the Industry.

What are the different types of Clove Oils?

THE DIFFERENT PARTS OF THE CLOVE TREE CAN BE STEAM DISTILLED TO PRODUCE VARIOUS TYPES OF CLOVE OILS LIKE CLOVE BUD OIL, CLOVE STEM OIL AND CLOVE LEAF OIL.

Clove bud oil derived from dried buds by steam distillation, contains free eugenol, eugenol acetate and caryophyllene. The stem oil contains more free eugenol than the bud oil, as well as eugenol acetate in smaller proportion. The leaf oil contains the least amount of total eugenol compared to the bud oil, and has small quantities of eugenol acetate.

How do we get our Clove Oil ?

We get all our Clove Oil from local Indonesian farmers and accumulators who harvest and process the Clove leaves, stem and bud through steam distillation to produce a crude form of Clove Oil.
